An Urban Understanding
A look at Gauteng as a province, it's two major cities and how they might become a future megalopolis.
Understanding this on a metro, sub-metro and precinct scale to best understand the location and impact of the selected site as a tether between the two cities. This location would then be looked as a way of being a connector to strengthen and increase activity in the site area as part of a great sub-metro growth plan.

Sketch Ideas
Ideas of iconography being explored through sketches and model making.
Finding ways of maximizing site potential through the exploration of the sites sloping nature, views from its high points over looking the context around it as well as integration of the public into a building that has historically had its program kept to a very private nature.

Site and Floor Plans
A new proposed site plan with the building positioned on the northern part of the site and using this as a means of integrating the largely private site to the enclosed, gated business district to the north of the site. This will allow for a large square flanked by medium rise buildings and the new proposed pit lane building. This would be a public mediating space along with several other points of entry from the enclosed district into the site.
The overall themes behind the plan is to hide the large area that would be taken up by the delivery and logistical trucks with the public square, as well as separating the upper private spaces to allow for a public realm to be developed within the building envelope.

Sections And Elevations
The main elevation of the building shows the relationship of the pit lane to the now raised private working domains with the public domain as a buffer between them. The elevation is also marked by the distinct undulating roof and four concrete cores that hold up the frame of the timber slatted building. The ends of the building meander from first floor merge to the surrounding ground level so as to keep a continuous public movement pathway.

Perspective Sections
A perspective section showing the relationship of the space as well as the roles of the core structures. This shows; the extent of the public realm within the first floor space, the privacy of the pits and the formalized spaces are maintained.

Renderings
A series of renderings that begin to show; the public domain at the first floor level and how this connects with the public square and the relationship to the private team garages and vehicles. The buildings overall expressions are shown and highlighted in these images and how this might sit within its existing context.
